We made a Star Trek fan buy our comic books! 👅
At the London MCM a few weeks back, a Trekkie wandered up to our stand, pointed his plastic phaser at me and said, “So what’s your book about?”
Putting it in language he’d understand, I said that in Star Trek, the spaceship is the vehicle that transports people to new worlds. But in our story, Arks, life itself is the vehicle.
Possibly overreaching a little, I then said that interstellar starships were an invention of 50s and 60s television serials, and that if humanity ever travels to extrasolar planets, we’ll more likely piggyback there on an extremophile that can survive the transit.
He hated this. Understandably. He loves spaceships. So do I.
So he went on the attack, saying that our idea seemed far-fetched, and that claiming our comic was based on a real-life prophecy* didn’t sound very scientific.
I said, “but science fiction is supposed to act as prophecy!”
The word prophecy doesn’t mean the supernatural foretelling of an event. It means a warning of consequences, should you fail to prepare for them.
That, I said, is why Arks is true science-fiction in that sense: because it is a warning for a future we haven’t prepared for.
At this point, he bit and asked, “What future haven’t we prepared for then?”
I said, “You’ll have to read our books.”
“Give me a clue,” he said.
So I told him about the War of Light.
And he bought all of our books.
